Lakeview Golf Club — A Shenandoah Valley Staple
Lakeview Golf Club has been a fixture in the Shenandoah Valley golf community for more than half a century. What began as a modest 9-hole course on the outskirts of Harrisonburg has grown into one of Virginia’s most versatile golf destinations, offering three distinct nines — Mountain, Lake, and Peak — each with its own personality, challenges, and charm.
“When I first came here in the late ’90s, we were still mostly focused on the original Mountain Nine,” recalls Lakeview’s Head Golf Professional. “Adding the Lake and Peak nines gave us incredible variety — now members can mix and match for a different experience every day. We’ve also invested heavily in irrigation, bunker renovations, and tee box upgrades to keep the course in top shape year-round.”
Set against the backdrop of Massanutten Peak, Lakeview blends dramatic elevation changes, tree-lined fairways, and well-placed hazards into layouts that reward both shot-making and creativity. It’s the kind of course where no two rounds feel exactly alike. The Mountain Nine tempts with tight, strategic par 4s; the Lake Nine demands precision on its water-lined holes; and the Peak Nine offers elevated tee boxes with sweeping views of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
If there’s one hole that defines Lakeview, it’s the Lake Nine’s island green par 3. “It’s visually stunning and mentally intimidating — the kind of hole golfers talk about long after their round,” says the pro with a grin. “Even if you miss the green, you’ll still have a story to tell.”
Lakeview’s calendar is as full as its fairways. Annual traditions like the Lakeview Invitational draw top amateur talent from across the region, while the Member–Guest Classic combines spirited competition with cookouts, live music, and camaraderie. Holiday scrambles keep things fun and light, and charity tournaments have raised over $100,000 for local causes in just the past five years. “Our Member–Guest is a highlight,” says the GM. “It’s about competition, but it’s also about friendships and tradition. And those charity events — they remind us that golf can do real good in our community.”
For first-time visitors, the advice is simple: don’t underestimate the course. “Our yardages may not be the longest, but the elevation changes and doglegs will keep you thinking,” the pro notes. “Take in the views, enjoy the challenge, and don’t forget to grab lunch at the grill afterwards.”
Looking ahead, Lakeview continues to evolve. Plans are underway to expand the practice facility and enhance short-game areas, ensuring the course remains a favorite for decades to come. But no matter how it changes, the heart of Lakeview will always be its community — the members, guests, and staff who make it more than just a place to play.
